Howard Pheatte was Foreman of Phoenix Engine Company No. 1 and was revered by his peers. It was said he was a man of irreproachable character and unquestioned reputation, and these qualities had made him a favorite with his fellow firemen. Howard succumbed to injuries he sustained from fighting a fire that occurred at a medical college in September 1884.
