Torrance Fire Department Battalion Chief Jack Rae McCarter passed away on October 4th, 2002, as a result of occupational cancer.  Called "Chief Jack" by his colleagues, he became a member of the Torrance Fire Department in 1965.  Throughout his career, he was known for his ever-present good nature and genuine vitality for life.  Promoted to Battalion Chief in 1983, his skills and intuition cast him as a respected member of the department in the highest traditions of the fire service.  The passing of Jack McCarter leaves an irreplaceable void in the many lives he touched along the way.
