Fire Chief Lloyd Harvey Hopkins was born in Joslin, Missouri on July 25, 1907. He went to work for the Ontario Fire Department as a firefighter on July 2, 1929. He worked his way up through the ranks, earning the position of Assistant Fire Chief on July 1, 1944 and was appointed Fire Chief on January 1, 1952. On July 29, 1963, Chief Hopkins, who had an "On Call" status, responded to a fire in Ontario. Shortly after, he died of a job-related heart attack. Chief Hopkins was active in many fire service organizations. He was a member of the California Fire Chiefs' Association; National Fire Protection Association; Pacific Coast Inter-Mountain Association; past president of both Citrus Belt Fire Chiefs' Association and the Ontario-Upland Industrial Supervisors Club
