LODD: LAFD Pilot/Firefighter Steven Robinson

United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, Local 112 is saddened to announce the line of duty death of one of their own.

LAFD Pilot/Firefighter Steven Robinson passed away August 9, 2015 at the age of 49. Brother Robinson died as a result of ongoing complications resulting from physical and head injuries suffered in the 1998 crash of a medi-vac helicopter he was piloting.

He began his career with the LAFD on August 14, 1986 and served the City of Los Angeles for 29 years from the skies and on the ground. He wore his pilot wings with distinction and flew countless missions to keep our communities safe.

On March 23, 1998, LAFD Pilot Steve Robinson and his air crew were rushing a critically injured 12-year-old girl to a hospital. During flight the tail rotor of the Bell 205 disintegrated and Pilot Robinson valiantly steered the doomed helicopter away from homes in the residential area and crashed in Griffith Park. Four people died in the crash – the young girl and L.A. City firefighters Michael A. Butler, Eric F. Reiner, and Michael D. McComb.

Pilot Robinson's injuries continued to impact him throughout his career. In 2009 he assumed a role as an LAFD sworn dispatcher, proudly wearing his pilot wings on the dispatch floor. On August 9, 2015, he succumbed to his long term injuries.

Because Brother Robinson’s death was the product of injuries suffered in the performance of his duty, the Los Angeles Fire Department has determined that Robinson died in the line of duty.
